A parent’s 20-minute privacy check for a school-issued device
Questions to ask and settings to review without interfering with school management or turning privacy into a second job.
Start by identifying what is managed by the school and what remains under family control. Review browser profiles, camera and microphone permissions, saved personal accounts, and whether the device is being used for unrelated family activity.
Do not remove management software or disable required safety settings. Instead, ask the school for its retention policy, monitoring scope, breach contact, and process for returning or wiping the device. Keep personal messaging and financial accounts on a separate device when possible.

The distinction between managed settings and family-controlled settings is important. Resetting a managed browser can also erase class access.
Exactly. The goal is a better conversation with the school, not trying to outsmart device management.
