What our small library learned after lending tools for one year
Circulation, missing parts, training, and the unglamorous maintenance work behind a 74-item tool collection.
Our branch started with 74 donated and purchased tools. Stud finders, socket sets, and sewing machines circulated most often; specialty tile tools barely moved. Returns were generally on time, but incomplete bit sets created more work than missing tools.
We now photograph every multi-part kit at checkout and include a laminated contents card. A monthly volunteer inspection has been enough for hand tools. Anything with a blade, battery, or heating element receives a staff check after every return.

Did you budget volunteer time as part of the program cost? The monthly inspection sounds small until the collection grows.
We logged 3.5 volunteer hours per month on average, plus staff checkout time. That belongs in the next-year report.
